I Resolve

by Mary Linda McKinney

I’d never been one for New Year’s resolutions until a few years ago when I lit on the idea of committing to more. The first year, I decided that I needed more tacos in my life so set the intention to eat tacos at least once per month. With the support of my darling spouse, Mark, that year’s resolution was a resounding success! The next year, I resolved to have more flowers in my life, which, although not as successful as the previous year, was nonetheless a practice of beauty. Pie was my declared intention the following year, very happily met with fruit pie, quiche, custard pie tomato pie, pizza pie, banana cream pie, and some very yummy tarts. Hurrah for more of what makes me happy!

For 2025, my resolution is to have folks in my house at least once each month. To kick off this resolution, we’re hosting a New Year’s Day brunch open house and will be cooking lots of crowd-friendly foods that can be kept warm for a few hours. I’m looking forward to seeing who will be the first to arrive and curious to know who will be the last to leave. I imagine we’ll play games and listen to music and christen the year with laughter and hugs.

“Blest Be the Tie That Binds” is my favorite hymn. Community is sacred to me. Tending to one another, strengthening our bonds, knowing one another in that which is silly and in That which is eternal are an important part of being a Friend for me. This resolution to connect with dear f/Friends and share what we have feels exactly right.
